La liste des 400 stars de la mode, de la musique, du cinéma, des réseaux sociaux, de la politique ou des entreprises — essentiellement américaines — a été gardée secrète jusqu’au dernier moment: on y a vu Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Lenny Kravitz, Ariana DeBose, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gigi et Bella Hadid et Stromae qui a confié à l’AFP trouver « bizarre » d’être là mais qu’il se sentait « honoré », lui le « petit Belge ».
L’homme le plus riche du monde, le fantasque Elon Musk, a levé les bras devant la foule. En passe de racheter Twitter, il a promis sur le tapis rouge d’en faire le réseau social « le plus inclusif possible ». Hillary Clinton a salué « l’esprit de l’Amérique » rayonnant au gala. Ont suivi les actrices Glenn Close, Sigourney Weaver et Jessica Chastain.
35.000 dollars l’entrée
Premières arrivées, la youtubeuse Emma Chamberlain est apparue dans une sublime robe Louis Vuitton et la grande prêtresse de l’événement, la toute-puissante rédactrice en chef de Vogue Anna Wintour, dans un ensemble Chanel.
Même invité, le ticket coûtait 35.000 dollars pour une place au dîner de gala, 200.000 à 300.000 dollars la table payée par un mécène, selon les chiffres non officiels de 2021. Soit un total estimé à plus de 16 millions de dollars.
Pour l’édition 2021, déplacée de mai à septembre pour cause de pandémie — après une annulation totale en 2020 –, le spectacle avait été assuré par Billie Eilish, transformée en Marilyn Monroe avec des cheveux blond platine. Plus sage cette année, elle portait un ensemble couleurs crème et vert de Gucci.
« Fin des armes à feu »
Le gala est aussi l’occasion d’un message politique: le maire de New York Eric Adams a débarqué avec une veste qui portait dans son dos son slogan de campagne exigeant « la fin de la violence par armes à feu » dans une ville meurtrie par la criminalité.
Dans la pure tradition philanthropique américaine, la soirée, qui a lieu le premier lundi de mai, est destinée à financer le département mode du Met (The Costume Institute) et coïncide avec sa grande exposition annuelle. Elle a été présentée lundi matin à la première dame des Etats-Unis, Jill Biden, qui y a vu « la célébration des designers et de la mode qui ont façonné la véritable identité de l’Amérique ».
Place cette année à une « Anthologie de la mode » américaine, une rétrospective des XIXe et XXe siècles d’une centaine de vêtements revisités par des réalisateurs et créateurs comme Sofia Coppola, Martin Scorsese ou Tom Ford.
Le gala s’est tenu alors que des journalistes et éditeurs de Vogue et d’autres titres du groupe Condé Nast (GQ, Vanity Fair, Glamour etc.) ont lancé un mouvement pour créer un syndicat, ce qu’ils ont rappelé sur les réseaux sociaux avec un pastiche de couverture de Vogue: « Met Gala 2022 la plus longue nuit des travailleurs ».
Kardashian en Marilyn
Sur le tapis rouge, il y a eu moins d’excentricités que les années passées: en 2019, le chanteur et acteur Billy Porter était apparu en dieu du soleil, déployant des ailes dorées et porté par des hommes au torse musclé. Et personne n’a égalé Lady Gaga et son strip-tease sur les marches.
Toutefois, Kim Kardashian, apparue toute de noir vêtue (y compris le visage) en septembre dernier, a bouclé ce méga défilé par un coup d’éclat: cheveux attachés et blond platine, moulée dans une robe beige scintillante, copie de celle que portait Marilyn Monroe lors de sa célébrissime chanson « Happy Birthday Mr President, à l’approche du 60e anniversaire de la mort de l’icône mondiale.
Créé en 1948, le gala du Met a longtemps été réservé à la très haute société new-yorkaise, mais Anna Wintour, qui l’a repris en main en 1995, l’a transformé en événement « people » adapté à l’ère des réseaux sociaux. Cette année, le titre de co-président d’honneur a d’ailleurs été offert au patron d’Instagram, Adam Mosseri, aux côtés d’Anna Wintour et du styliste Tom Ford.
