Brodées, les « meilleures » punchlines de Trump gagnent encore en saveur (en images)

Ils vivent mal le flot ininterrompu des tweets de leur président et se sentent démunis; une artiste américaine les appelle à broder quelques-unes de ces fameuses citations, un projet qui a fait boule de neige.

Tout a commencé en janvier de l’année dernière par une photo postée sur Instagram. « I Am a Very Stable Genius » (« je suis un génie très stable ») surbrodé sur un motif floral typique de la broderie classique. Diana Weymar venait de passer ses nerfs en cousant cette phrase, tweetée par Donald Trump en réponse à des articles qui s’interrogeaient sur sa santé mentale.

Le succès a été instantané. Motivée par la vague de soutien qu’elle a reçue, l’artiste a décidé de broder une ou deux de ces citations qui, depuis plus de trois ans, rendent folle une partie de l’Amérique. Mais face à un président qui multiplie les déclarations et tweete parfois plus de dix fois par jour, elle s’est vite sentie dépassée, au point d’organiser des ateliers et d’en appeler aux brodeuses et brodeurs du monde entier.

Le résultat, c’est le « Tiny Pricks Project », qui compte désormais plus de 900 pièces cousues de « Trumpisms », dont beaucoup sont exposés en ce moment dans une boutique de New York, Lingua Franca, jusqu’à début septembre.

Agée de 50 ans, Diana Weymar en a cousu environ la moitié, elle qui a déjà initié d’autres projets autour de la couture et du travail collaboratif. « Crooked Hillary » (Hillary-la-crapule), surnom dont il a affublé Hillary Clinton depuis la campagne présidentielle de 2016; « Witch Hunt! », en référence à la chasse aux sorcières dont Donald Trump s’estime victime dans le cadre de l’enquête russe… Les phrases apparaissent sur des napperons, des petites culottes ou des bavoirs.

De l’horrible et du beau

« C’est une façon créative de gérer cette folie, ce qui est difficile à trouver en ce moment », a expliqué Diana Weymar. « Pour moi, ce projet revient à piquer votre conscience », dit-elle en référence au travail de l’aiguille.

L’artiste utilise le mot « pricks », qui a un double, voire un triple sens. Il veut à la fois dire piqûre, mais aussi dresser l’oreille (prick up). « Et bien sûr, il y a la référence à l’autre signification », s’amuse-t-elle, car « prick » peut aussi vouloir dire « con ».

Pour ceux qui ont rejoint le projet, aux Etats-Unis mais aussi en France, au Royaume-Uni et jusqu’en Australie, le « Tiny Pricks Project » est une façon de se soulager, et de protester. « On se sent tellement démuni et frustré face à l’état du pays », explique Rebecca Gerstung, qui visite l’exposition. « Cela mélange de l’horrible à du beau », dit-elle. « Et se servir de l’aiguille pour planter, ça aide sûrement à extérioriser la colère. »

Certaines des phrases prononcées par le président sur les femmes reviennent à plusieurs reprises, notamment le tristement célèbre « Grab ’em by the pussy » (« les attraper par la chatte »), tiré d’une conversation avec l’animateur Billy Bush, en marge d’une émission enregistrée en 2005. Donald Trump expliquait alors que sa notoriété lui permettait d’embrasser et de toucher les femmes sans leur consentement.
