Elizabeth II est apparue jeudi au célèbre balcon du palais de Buckingham à Londres au premier jour des célébrations de ses 70 ans de règne, acclamée par des dizaines de milliers de personnes.
La souveraine de 96 ans, vêtue d’une tenue mauve et s’appuyant sur une canne, était accompagnée du duc de Kent, colonel des Scots Guards, un des régiments d’élite de la garde royale britannique, qui a salué les participants du défilé militaire annuel du « Salut aux couleurs ».

La souveraine est revenue sur le balcon un peu plus tard, pour un survol aérien de la Royal Air Force, cette fois accompagnée par les membres de la famille royale qui ont des fonctions officielles et leurs enfants. Jamais aucun monarque britannique n’a régné aussi longtemps, d’où l’importance pour le pays de célébrer ce Jubilé de platine d’une reine toujours extrêmement populaire. Pour nombre de Britanniques qui l’ont toujours connue, Elizabeth II est symbole de stabilité et d’unité depuis 70 ans. Le palais n’avait confirmé l’apparition au balcon de la souveraine, qui a des difficultés à marcher, que tard mercredi.

En raison de la pandémie de Covid, c’était la première apparition depuis 2019 de la monarque sur ce balcon, qui projette l’image de la monarchie britannique depuis plus d’un siècle. Dans le passé, jusqu’à 40 personnes s’y étaient pressés, mais la reine a décidé cette année que seuls ceux « travaillant » pour la monarchie pourraient venir y saluer avec leurs enfants, soit 18 personnes.
Autour d’elle le prince Charles, héritier de la Couronne et son épouse Camilla, le prince William, deuxième dans l’ordre de succession et son épouse Kate, la princesse Anne, fille de la reine, et son mari, ainsi que le plus jeune fils d’Elisabeth II, Edward, et sa femme, ainsi que trois cousins de la souveraine. Les enfants de William et d’Edward seront aussi présents. Le prince Harry et son épouse Meghan, installés en Californie depuis qu’ils ont pris leurs distances avec la monarchie il y a deux ans n’ont pas été autorisés sur le balcon, pas plus que le prince Andrew, fils cadet de la souveraine, privé de toute fonction officielle depuis des accusations d’agressions sexuelles dont il s’est débarrassé en payant plusieurs millions de dollars à son accusatrice.
